So, I may end up running a game of Avatar soon. Will be using Heroquest to do so, so no worries on system. I am wondering about stuff to throw at players, however.
General pitch is going to be that the PCs are initiates of the White Lotus Society, about 10-15 years after the war. Each of them has been sponsored into the Society for whatever reason, and they have passed their initial tests and now are being sent on a sort of graduation test: to walk the world and gain experience from observing the people of all four nations (for this game, the Airbenders are back, sort of. A group of women and children were evacuated into the spirit world, where they have been living for a hundred years in seclusion. Relatively shortly after the war, Aang finds out about this and goes to bring them back into the real world. At about this time, the children of the inventors who were living in the Air Temples start manifesting bending abilities, as the world works to restore balance). The overall framing quest will be to visit a White Lotus Master in each of the four nations and perform a task for each of them, and of course to help people and learn along the way.
Themes I would like to hit:
Personal growth: This is a big one. From what we know of Iroh, I feel a big part of the White Lotus is learning to take approaches and advice from the practices of all four nations, so there need to be lessons to be learned and stuff to be taught.
Rebuilding: The world is still reorganizing itself after 100 years of war. There has been untold damage to the landscape, the balance of the spirit world, and to the trust between peoples. The end of the war healed some of that, but the real work is just beginning.
There also needs to be some sort of overarching enemy, I think. I'm contemplating some sort of dark secret society, but I'm not sure what their goals would be besides ill-defined world domination. There's also definitely going to be rebellion in the Fire Nation, most likely discontented soldiers allied with Dai Li remnants. In any case, I'm going to need excuses for bending combat.
I'm not really interested in hitting the technological progress angle... it's just not to my tastes. There will be some (balloons used for transport and communication), but it won't be a big focus.
And of course, just generally exploring the silliness and awesomeness of the Avatar world.
Anyone have any suggestions? I realize it's a bit hard to customize some of this without knowing what the characters will be.
